      <image:caption>The Gateway Trail System is located on the Shasta–Trinity National Forest, which is the largest national forest in California, encompassing 2.2 million acres. The Shasta McCloud Management Unit is based in Mount Shasta and contains the Mount Shasta and McCloud Ranger Districts. The unit encompasses approximately 800,000 acres. The Gateway Trail System is included as part of the National Forest System Trails. The Shasta McCloud Management Unit manages approximately 140 miles of NFS trails and 145 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail meanders through the unit. The Forest Service’s mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the nation’s forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations.</image:caption>
